Association SMS (Slovak Metrological Society) under the auspices of the Slovak Office of Standards, Metrology and Testing has lately organized already 46th Forum of metrology. The main aim of the conference was, as well as in previous years, to recall the importance of measuring and metrology and also to resolve the issue of selected field of industry. This year’s forum was devoted to Measurement Management System in the automotive industry.
Many important lecturers from the world of science and technology have participated among the speakers this year. They enriched the program of the conference with their thematic presentations. The conference was also attended by Stephen Patoray, director of BIML, who visited Slovakia for the second time. Awarding Jan Andrej Segner Prize for metrology was one part of the conference too. S. Patoray gained this prize for his active work and lifetime contribution in the field of metrology as well as for his rich work as a lecturer. It was handed to him by the president of the ÚNMS SR, Jozef Mihok.
Members of Slovak legal metrology also took part in the conference. Jaromir Markovic, general director of SLM, was awarded plaque on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of founding the Association of Slovak Scientific and Technological Societies.

The Ministry of Economy honored Slovak companies for the ninth time. Twenty four companies have in the previous year been found interesting thanks to their innovative solutions. They were competing for the Award of the Minister of Economy in three categories – Product innovations, Technological innovations and Service innovations.
Slovak Legal Metrology organization appeared among the winners of the competition this year too. SLM received the price for successful 2nd place during the International Engineering Fair 2016 in Nitra. It was handed by the State secretary of the department Rastislav Chovanec. The award-winning idea of SLM in the category Service innovations is a draft of Metrological control of weighing equipment using “OVAH” application.
The “OVAH” application is now fully utilized at all five workplaces in Slovakia and it is used by 40 technical staff members. Its using has become easy with an attribute “user friendly” and modern application of tablets with touch control. The automated process brings not only efficiency, but also increases the quality, it automates calculations and evaluation, enables to document the process and provides the possibility to maintain consistency of published papers and many other unquestionable advantages. This innovative and original solution is truly unique even in comparison with the approaches used by the neighboring countries.
On the occasion of the presentation of new “additions” in laboratories at SLM Bratislava we invited for a short visit the director of Department of Metrology of the Office of Standards, Metrology and Testing of the Slovak Republic – Zbyněk Schreier and we presented new results of our research activities to him.
Slovak Legal Metrology can boast nowadays with great number of newly acquired equipments and instruments mainly in the period of last year. Among measures which we proudly introduced is for example equipment for verification of level meters with guided wave whose advantage is especially full automatization which not only makes process easier but also eliminates subjective influences that may occur in measurement and evaluation. Another, very important for us is equipment for controlling of axle weights and suspension weights, specific mainly for the special type of construction, which allows imitate real conditions. New additions at laboratory of electricity are the Multifunction Calibrator (Fluke 5730) which markedly reduces measurement uncertainties and provides new opportunities and the second one- Reference Multimeter (8508A) which is currently one of the most accurate digital multimeter ever, thanks to several unique features. Also Cryostat (Fluke 7381) in the laboratory of heat is the one of the best on the market with advantages such as rapid onset and excellent stability of temperature field.
We believe that the positive trend of successful development will continue also in the future and we will be able to fulfill our customers’ requirements better and more thoroughly.
Unique 3D optical microscope ZEISS O- INSPECT has already found its place also in our laboratory of lengths in Bratislava. Slovak Legal Metrology can be proud of this unique instrument as the first within Slovakia and even the Czech Republic.
This multi-sensor measuring instrument allows flexible measurement of each characteristic- optically or tangentially. O- INSPECT ensures reliable 3D accuracy in accordance with standards. Available CALYPSO software also facilitates the process of measuring through the simple providing of results and easier detection and identification of defects.
ZEISS O- INSPECT excels in special parameters which ensure reliable results and faster measurement and for these reasons is for our laboratory invaluable asset.

SLM offers its new service – calibration of the extensometers used for one axle tensile tests, being the part of the tensile testing machines. These measuring instruments shall be calibrated in order to assure the quality of the presented results of the mechanical material tests in accordance with STN EN ISO 9513“2003 standard.
The equipment is used for the evaluation of the strength and deformation material characteristics. That means, in addition to the strength measurements, the measurement of the tested sample elongation is also important for the material properties analysis. SLM provides this service using the top quality equipment intended for extensometers of the classes 0,2 up to 2, in accordance with the classification of the extensometers specified in STN EN ISO 9513. Besides the calibration of this equipment, we provide also the calibration of other one axle measuring instruments used in the tensile testing machines and presses, such as deformation measuring instruments.
Products Certification body of SLM (Notified Body no. 1432) has put into practice the application of the additional security features on issued certificates. The new security features are following:
With effect from 26.06.2012 the certificates (module B, D and H1) issued after 26.06.2012 are valid only if they bear the signature and stamp of the notified body, holographic label and QR code.
Note: QR code and its using
QR code contains encoded information about the path to the respective certificate in the database of issued certificates, available on the web page www.slm.sk. QR Code is the way to access the database of issued certificates and display its content.
On 16th and 17th February 2012 the representative of Slovak legal metrology participated in the meeting of the WELMEC Working Group 8 (WG8) that assures the development of recommendations in the field of the general application of MID. The meeting took place in Berlin and it was attended by the metrological organisations´ representatives from most of the European countries.
The discussion was focused especially on the following topics:
In conclusion of discussion, the participants reviewed the fulfilment of the WG work program and set dates and locations of the next meetings.
